OPEN END

BACHELOR PROJECT PART 2

“Open End” was a project about loss and grief. In the western civilisation people are becoming less religious, there- fore there is a need to make new rituals to say goodbye to our loved ones. Our assignment was to design a place for people recovering from grief. A place of reflection, a place to deal with the pain.

The assignment consisted of two sub-assignments. The second site was located in Gent-Brugge, Geboortebos.

"Geboortebos" means "Nativity Forest". The parents of the newborn babies in the province of Ghent can plant a tree for their baby in this beautiful location.

I worked around the subject of still-born babies. I created a place to sit, reflect and to rest in the middle of the forest. My inspiration for the design came from the cocoon of a silkworm. Like a silkworm the baby grows in the cocoon, but becomes a butterfly and flies away from the parents.
